JCM800 2203 100W Lead – 1982
A superb 1982 Marshall JCM800 2203 100-watt Master Model Lead, dating from the early years of the JCM800 era and presented in very good condition.
The 2203 needs little introduction. Originally developed during the JMP period, the circuit carried over into the new JCM800 range at the beginning of the 1980s and went on to become one of the most recognisable and influential Marshall amplifiers ever produced.
This example carries serial number S/A 04415P, with the P suffix denoting 1982 production. The original internal inspection sticker is also present and appears to be dated 20/4/82.
The amp presents extremely well internally, with a particularly clean PCB and wiring. It retains its classic early JCM800 cosmetics, including the vertical-input layout, black covering, gold control panel and large Marshall script logo.
Tonally, this is exactly what a good 2203 should be: tight, immediate and extremely responsive, with a huge amount of punch and that unmistakable aggressive Marshall upper-midrange.
At lower Preamp settings there is considerably more clarity and headroom than the JCM800's reputation might suggest. Turn the Preamp up and it moves progressively into the thick, harmonically rich crunch for which the 2203 became famous. Add a boost in front and there is more than enough aggression available for classic hard rock and metal.
With 100 watts and four EL34s, there is also a sense of weight and authority that the smaller Marshalls simply do not quite reproduce.
Original Marshall Valves
The amplifier is fitted with a quartet of Marshall-branded EL34 output valves, while the preamp contains two Marshall-branded and one MAZDA ECC83s. The output valves have been retained following testing during the amplifier's recent inspection.
Recently Professionally Serviced
The amplifier has recently undergone a full professional inspection, service and test. During the inspection, the potentiometers were found to be smooth and noise-free, while intermittent valve sockets and an incorrect screen resistor were identified.
The following work was carried out:
- All input and output sockets replaced
- Incorrect V6 screen resistor replaced with a vintage NOS 1K 5W resistor
- Existing valves tested
- Full operational check and testing
The work was completed in September 2026 and the amplifier is now fully operational and ready to use.

The early vertical-input JCM800 2203 is one of the definitive Marshall amplifiers. There is very little between the guitar and the speaker — just an incredibly effective circuit with huge dynamics, punch and attitude.
With its 1982 date, vintage Marshall valve complement and recent professional service, this is a particularly appealing example that is ready to be played rather than simply collected.
